Plastic movement
Trade marks: Astrolon and Sytal (Systeme Total d'Autolubrification). First samples shown 1960 as movements swimming in water.
This project became a flop by several reasons: It was not planned as cheap product, and was even more expensive than contemporary conventional movements. Tissot believed that such an innovative product, which needed no service, should rectify a higher price. But this concept was accepted neither by the dealers, who could not make money with servicing, nor by the users, who already regarded plastic as typical for cheap items. And when the product was finally ready for serial production, it had already to compete with cheap quartz movements. Thus, although the production capacity was ready for a million per year, just few hundred-thousands were totally made, and the major part of them went finally into the garbage combustion.
Anyway, valuable know how in precision plastic processing was gained, and became one reason for the Swatch success.
