A wheel between barrel and minute pinion allows to place center-second wheel and barrel in the same layer, and thus, regarding former conditions, a rather thin base movement (3.5mm), despite the sweep second. The changed revolution direction of the barrel makes an additional wheel in the winding gear necessary.
