Fig.2: In the barrel is a slip spring with a hook A for the mainspring on one end. The bent other end hooks into on of 5 notches B, as long as the end with hook presses on it. If the mainspring pulls the hook to the center, the slip-spring end leaves the notch and jumps to the next.
The alarming snap noise is often interpreted as damage, but is actually a signal that the watch is fully wound.
